@ dqqplayer, I think you touched an interesting question: what kind of friends do people have. FB argues that we friend people with similar interests, so we will be interested in reading what our friends are reading, and buying what our friends are buying. How true is this statement?

I am reading "The Tipping Point", and on page 35, there are some interesting lines that shed some light on this, and I would like to quote here:

"... In general, people chose friends of similar age and race. But if the friend lived down the hall, then age and race became a lot less important. Proximity overpowered similarity. Another study, done on students at the University of Utah, found that if you ask someone why he is friendly with someone else, he'll say it is because he and his friend share similar attitudes. But if you actually quiz the two of them on their attitudes, you'll find out that what they actually share is similar activities. We're friends with the people we do things with, as much as we are with the people we resemble."

If PROXIMITY is the real factor that decide whom WE friend with, how much similarity can be drawn between us and our friends?

General Motors Pulls Advertising From Facebook [REPORT] - mashable.com
In a big vote of no confidence before Facebook’s IPO, General Motors is pulling its ads from the platform, calling them “ineffective,” according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The automaker determined that its ads on the platform “had little impact on consumers,” according to the report, which cites “people familiar with the matter.” GM will continue to market via Facebook’s brand Pages, which, of course, are free.

The article quotes GM marketing chief Joel Ewanick as saying GM “is definitely reassessing our advertising on Facebook, although the content is effective and important.” Ewanick’s use of “content” in this case refers to Facebook brand Pages.
